At this year’s DLR County Chamber Business Awards Gala, John T. Murphy was celebrated as the Person of the Year 2024, an honor acknowledging his remarkable journey, diverse achievements, and lifelong dedication to community enrichment. Starting his career in medicine at University College Dublin, John soon discovered his true calling elsewhere and transitioned into accounting, becoming the first auditor at Clery’s on O’Connell Street. It was here he found his passion for retail, which would set him on a path of impactful leadership.
John’s career took a diplomatic turn when he joined the Irish Embassy in London, and he later became Director of GAISCE – The President’s Award, a role where he earned the prestigious Patrick J. Hillery Award for Outstanding Service to Ireland’s youth. This was the beginning of his journey in youth empowerment and leadership training, a mission he’s carried forward under four Irish presidents.
Among his many roles, John chaired the Patton Flyer, laying the groundwork for Aircoach, and was instrumental as the first chairman of Ireland’s merged scouting organizations. In his finance career, he guided the Dalkey Credit Union’s merger to become part of the Core Credit Union Group. Additionally, as chairman of the European Task Force on Leader Training, he has shared his insights and empowered countless leaders across Europe.
Beyond professional achievements, John’s love for his community is seen in his dedication to local events. He has been the force behind the Dalkey Lobster Festival, the Dalkey Vintage Car Festival, and the Dalkey Comedy Festival, and regularly supports Dun Laoghaire’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and other cultural events. Known affectionately by family as a “serial volunteer,” John has tirelessly mentored young entrepreneurs over the last decade, encouraging the next generation of business talent.
Congratulations to John, a true pillar of service, whose legacy of passion and commitment is felt far and wide across our community.
